YouTube Launches Nonprofit Program

by Mike Abundo on September 27th, 2007

YouTube launches a new program that allows nonprofit organizations to receive donations through — surprise, surprise — Google Checkout. Today’s YouTube front page features thirteen of the nonprofits using the program, headlined by the ever tech-savvy Bill Clinton.

Google Video proved that DRM-laced pay-per-download sucks inside online video. Now we’ll see if online video viewers will give money to causes instead of corporations. Either way, YouTube passing more money to deserving YouTubers is definitely a step in the right direction: first the partner program, and now this nonprofit program.

On a side note, I notice YouTube announced this program at 2:30 am PST today. Apparently, those people work into the wee hours of the morning. I guess $1.65 billion buys a lot of coffee.
